Bridal Shower and Custom Handmade Pocketfolds available in Toronto...

It will be easier to narrow down the hundreds of choices you have available to you if you prepare yourself ahead of time. For example, decide on the formality of the event, prepare your guest lists and numbers ahead of time, and decide on a theme or colour scheme and budget for your wedding. If the invitation company you are interested in working with does not have the exact colour that you were looking for try using it as an accent colour instead. Also, before visiting the wedding stationery stores make sure you have all your information gathered including, locations, times and addresses.

How many Invitations do you need...

A good rule of thumb is to order half the number of invitations as the number of guests you are going to invite plus 10 to 15 extra invitations that will come in handy as keepsakes or for anybody you have accidentally left off your list. Also, make sure that you do receive a few extra envelopes with your order in case of mistakes. Married couples and families only need one invitation. If there is a child over the age of 18 living at home it is customary to include their name on the outer envelope or send them their own invitation.

When to mail them and How much to spend...

You want to mail out the invitations about 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding and it usually will take about 4 to 6 weeks to order and receive the final product. Leave about 1 week for yourself to address and send out the invitaitons. You should probably set aside about 2 to 5% of your total wedding budget to spend on your invitations and stationery.

What you'll need...

The items you will need are the invitation itself, a response card, an envelope for each and an optional reception card (if you have additional information) and an optional map or directional card for your guests. Other inserts may include an entourage or bridal party list or luncheon card. Some couples may opt to send a Save-the-Date card if they are having their wedding on a holiday weekend or hosting a wedding outside of Toronto. This gives people extra time to reserve time off work and organize their schedule for the event.

Addressing the envelopes...

Traditionally, all addressing on envelopes should be handwritten and the addressing should not be abbreviated. Another option would be to have your invitation company print the addresses on the envelopes for you. This will cost a little more but could save you a lot of time and hassle in the long run. Your invitation company should print the return address on the back flap of your invitation envelope and on the front of your response envelope. This should be the address of whoever is hosting the wedding.

Some suggestions to Keep in Mind:

  • There should be no punctuation except after courtesy titles (such as Mr. and Dr.)
  • Numbers in the date are most often spelled out
  • Times should be spelt out
  • More formal invitations are mostly written in the third person
  • If you are not inviting Children to your reception you may write, "Adult Reception to follow" on the invitation or "Number of Adults Attending _______ Not attending _______" on the response card.
  • If you would like you may use a corner copy to let your guests know that the reception is immediately following the ceremony. It is situated on the left or right hand side of the invitation in smaller print.

Of course, these are all just traditional suggestions but there is ho hard and fast rules about how you must word your invitations. If you are going for a more contemporary style of invitation you can really customize your wording to suit your own individual personlity.

Mailing your invitations...

You should stuff your invitations in your envelope with the invitation on the bottom and the extra inserts on top. Stuff the invitation in the envelope so that each guest opening the envelope will immediately see the front of the invitation. Don't forget to always take a completed invitation to your post office and weigh it before sending all your invitations off. More often then not, your invitations will be extra postage not because of the size but because of the weight.
